How the Abbott Alinity c analyzer runs your chemistry menu

The Alinity c measures photometric chemistry and electrolytes in one processing module. A separate System Control Module runs it, along with any modules you add later. Reagent and sample carousels are stacked, which puts 70 reagents and 150 samples in a unit 119 cm (47 in) wide.

Load reagents, calibrators, controls and consumables while the analyzer runs, so testing doesn't stop for restocking.
Store calibrators and controls onboard and let the system run them on schedule. Calibration intervals run from 1 to 60 days and onboard reagent stability from 5 to 60 days, depending on the assay.
Measure sodium, potassium and chloride together on the ICT module, a single integrated chip with automated maintenance. Abbott rates it at CVs of 1% or less and 60,000 determinations per module.
Move STAT work ahead of routine samples by prioritizing a single rack or by setting fixed STAT positions.
Flag compromised samples. The system detects clots, bubbles and foam when it aspirates, and measures hemolysis, icterus and lipemia indices.
Cut repeats on enzyme assays with FlexRate, which extends their linear range, and let the system dilute and rerun out-of-range samples automatically.
Hold sample-to-sample carryover at 0.1 ppm or less with SmartWash, which uses no extra consumables.
Load primary tubes or sample cups in 6-position racks, and test serum, plasma, urine, CSF, hemolysate and whole blood from 1.5 to 35 µL of sample, depending on the assay.
Plan on no daily maintenance for the chemistry module, about 30 minutes a week and about 2 minutes a month, by Abbott's estimate.
Send results to your LIS over HL7 or ASTM with bidirectional host query, and keep up to 200,000 results onboard.

Ask for the list of assays tested on the Alinity c models we have in stock and check against your menu.

Abbott Alinity c throughput: how many tests per hour?

One Alinity c processing module runs up to 1,350 tests an hour. Photometric assays run at up to 900 tests an hour, and the ICT module supplies the rest of the rated capacity. It reads sodium, potassium and chloride from the same sample at once, and each result counts as a test.

Your real hourly output depends on your test mix.

  • A menu heavy in electrolytes, such as basic and comprehensive metabolic panels, pushes the analyzer toward its maximum test rating.
  • A menu built mostly on photometric chemistry, such as lipids, liver enzymes and specific proteins, tops out near 900 tests an hour.
  • Reruns and dilutions take capacity away from new samples. FlexRate extends the linear range on enzyme assays, so fewer samples need a repeat.
  • Continuous loading keeps the analyzer testing while your techs add reagents and supplies.

Run 971 tests an hour per square meter of floor space.

Need more capacity later? One System Control Module runs up to four Alinity c modules. Two modules run up to 2,700 tests an hour, and four run up to 5,400.

Build an Alinity c system that fits your volume and menu

Every Alinity c system pairs one System Control Module with up to four processing modules. Start with one Alinity c, add chemistry modules as your volume grows, or join an Alinity i immunoassay module to make an Alinity ci.

Single Alinity c. One processing module with 70 reagent cartridges and 150 samples onboard, running up to 1,350 tests an hour.

Two to four Alinity c modules. Two modules hold 140 reagent cartridges and 300 samples, and four hold 280 cartridges and 600 samples. Spread a large menu across modules, or run your highest-volume tests on more than one.

Alinity ci. Add an Alinity i and run chemistry and immunoassay on one system at up to 1,550 tests an hour. We'll pair a refurbished Alinity i with the Alinity c you own, or supply the complete ci.

Lab automation. The Alinity c connects to Abbott's ACCELERATOR a3600, which can connect to many third-party track systems.

Room to grow. Add a module later without replacing the analyzer you start with.

Plan floor space, power and water for your Alinity c

A single Alinity c stands 134 cm (53 in) tall on a 119 x 117 cm (47 x 46 in) footprint and weighs 712 kg (1,570 lb). Each module you add widens the system, so plan the space for the configuration you expect to grow into.

  • Power each processing module from a 180 to 264 V, 16 A supply. The System Control Module runs on 90 to 264 V, 16 A.
  • Plumb a dedicated water supply, and route waste to a drain or collect it onboard. One module uses about 27 L (7.1 gal) an hour on average and less than 30 L (7.9 gal) an hour at peak.
  • Size your HVAC for an average heat output of 2,005 Btu per module during processing.
  • Expect noise of about 56 dBA at 1 meter.
  • Connect the system to your LIS over HL7 or ASTM.

Share your room dimensions and utilities with us, and we'll check them against the configuration you're considering.

Which labs buy a refurbished Abbott Alinity c?

These are the labs we see buying it refurbished.

Labs moving off Architect. Abbott built Alinity assays on the same technology as its Architect assays, so your results compare across the two platforms when you run method comparisons.

Labs short on floor space. Swap an older, wider analyzer for one that runs more tests on less floor space.

Labs already running Alinity. Add a backup analyzer or a second module, and your validated methods, reference intervals and QC rules transfer to it. Every Alinity system uses the same software and screens, so your staff already know how to run it.

Labs planning to add immunoassay. Start with the Alinity c now and add an Alinity i on the same System Control Module when your budget allows.

Hospital labs with heavy STAT work. Set fixed STAT positions for ED and ICU samples, and keep loading reagents without pausing routine testing.

Abbott Alinity c price. What you pay new vs. refurbished

Abbott quotes new systems by contract, often as part of a reagent agreement that builds the analyzer's cost into your per-test reagent pricing. We price each refurbished Alinity c individually, because units differ in year of manufacture and configuration. Whichever unit fits your lab, you pay up to 70% less than new and own it outright.

What sets the price of your Alinity c

Your quote depends on:

  • The analyzer's year of manufacture.
  • The configuration, from a single Alinity c to a multi-module system or an Alinity ci.
  • Installation, assay programming and verification in your lab.
  • Operator training.
  • The service plan you choose.
  • Freight and rigging to your site.
  • The trade-in value of the analyzer you're retiring.

Why buy a refurbished Alinity c instead of new?

Lower capital cost. Paying up to 70% less than new gives you a smaller capital request to take to your finance committee.
Ownership. You own the analyzer instead of paying it off through reagent pricing on a multi-year contract, and you choose who services it.
A proven platform. There are as many as 3,625 Alinity ci-series systems in clinical use in the US and about 16,600 more across 154 countries.
The same assays. A refurbished Alinity c runs the same Abbott assays as a new one, and we supply the reagents and consumables.
Expansion on your schedule. Add a second module or an Alinity i in a later budget cycle.
Less waste. Rebuilding an analyzer keeps it in service and out of landfill, and it takes less energy and raw material than building a new one.

Get a price for your lab

Send us your daily test volume, your test menu and when you need the analyzer running, and we'll quote the units that fit. Ask for the quote as a monthly payment too. With $0 down and low introductory payments, you can set it beside the instrument cost built into a reagent agreement.
